Welcome back to school and welcome to Year Five!
This term, our topic is Out of this World. Our learning will be focused around the Earth and Space across the curriculum. Our first project will be an Art project exploring reflections and shadows. In Geography, we will be learning about mountain ranges in the UK, Europe, South America and even on other planets! In Computing, we will be creating our own space race games.
In English, we will focus on joining our handwriting and securing key spellings. We will also explore figurative language to create poems about the Moon and the planets. After learning about Neil Armstrong’s great achievements, we are going to be creating a biography about him.
In Maths, our focus is on place value and understanding the number system. We will explore rounding, negative numbers and decimals. As well as this, we will revisit our addition and subtraction strategies.
In Guided Reading, our work will be focused around a book called The Jamie Drake Equation by Christopher Edge. To help expand our vocabulary, we will be focusing on five key words from the text each week and creating actions to help us remember them. We are also going to be practising reading aloud fluently and with expression.
In Science, we are learning about Space. We will explore our solar system by making models and by studying the findings of other scientists. In addition, we will explore why we have day and night and why we have different time zones.
PE will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure that PE kits are brought in on Monday and taken home on Friday. Homework is given out on Friday and due the following Wednesday. Remember, you can access your TTRockstars, Mathletics and Bug Club accounts any time at home.
