In English we are focusing on a variety of short stories, including Cloud Tea Monkey’s, The Wolves in the Walls and The Promise. We are using these stories to correct form sentences using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. We are also focusing on adding extra information to our sentences by using fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases.
This term we are studying two different novels as part of our Guided Reading sessions. These texts are ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. We read the book as a class and answer comprehension and inference questions every day, as well as complete different follow-up reading activities E.g. Read through chapter 1 and identify all the similes the author has used to describe the main character, predict what might happen next in the story, design a new front cover for the book, etc.
Children are all given a reading book and reading diary. Our expectation is they read for 5-10 minutes every evening. Reading diaries are checked and signed by the teacher or teaching assistant every week. I am more than happy to the children to sign their own diaries to indicate if they have read at home but kindly ask if parents can check and sign this at least once per week. Reading certificates are given out when children have read 25, 50, 75 and 100 books.
All children also have access to ‘Bug Club’ (usernames and passwords are in their reading diaries). Here, they are allocated books, which they can read online which are appropriate to their reading level.
This term we will be revising and learning:
Review plurals – adding –s, -es, -ies, -ves
Review suffixes beginning with consonant letters to words: -ment, -less, -ful, -ly
Review suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words
Review suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words with unstressed syllables
Focus on words that double the final consonant from the Y3/4 or 5/6 statutory word list
Review soft c- words in statutory list
Explore words with the /i:/ sound spelt ei after c
Explore words with -cial or -tial endings
Explore words ending in –cially or –tially
In maths, we are following a CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach to teaching and learning. We believe children throughout the school should be using concrete resources (cubes, dienes, etc.) to explore and extend their learning further before moving onto abstract methods.
This term we will be focusing on:
Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Negative Numbers, Multiplication including factors and prime numbers and square and cube numbers as well as learning formal written methods for multiplication.
